What should you know about depression and fatigue?

Short answer
Depression commonly presents with fatigue, yet fatigue has many possible causes, so persistent or limiting tiredness deserves a clinical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Making sense of fatigue
Depression-related fatigue can feel like low physical energy, mental slowing or effort that is hard to start. Sleep may be poor or excessive, and concentration, appetite and motivation may change. Insomnia, daytime sleepiness, anxiety, anaemia, thyroid disease, infection, medication effects and other health problems can also cause fatigue. The pattern and associated symptoms matter more than tiredness alone.
Steps that may help
Keep a short record of energy, sleep, mood, meals, activity and medicines. Use a regular routine, break tasks into manageable parts, eat regularly, drink enough fluids and add gentle movement if safe. Arrange a GP appointment when fatigue persists, worsens, follows an illness or interferes with work, self-care or relationships. Assessment may address mood, sleep and physical causes together.
When to seek urgent care
Get urgent help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, new confusion, one-sided weakness, black stools or rapidly worsening illness. Seek immediate mental-health support if low mood includes suicidal thoughts, self-harm urges or feeling unable to stay safe.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which symptoms suggest depression, whether sleep or medicines could be contributing, whether blood tests are appropriate, and how to build a gradual recovery plan without overexertion.

Questions people ask
Is fatigue a common presentation of depression?
Yes. Many people with depression experience low energy or mental exhaustion, although fatigue alone cannot identify its cause.
Should I push through severe fatigue?
Gentle activity may help when safe, but severe or worsening fatigue needs assessment and should not be ignored or forced through.
