Why might deodorant be turning your underarms dark?

A reaction may begin with burning, itching, redness, dryness, or small bumps. Repeated exposure can keep the inflammation active, even when the original rash is subtle. After the irritation fades, the area may stay darker as Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation. Sweat, rubbing, shaving, and a damp skin fold can amplify the problem; inflammation in that setting may also fit Intertrigo. A darker area does not prove that deodorant is the only cause.

Stop the suspected deodorant and avoid applying fragrance, exfoliating acids, or bleaching products to the area while it is irritated. Wash gently, pat dry, and reduce friction from tight clothing or repeated shaving. Keep a note of when each product was started and whether symptoms follow application.
