Demodicosis of the eyelids

Mites can live around eyelashes and the oil glands along the eyelid edge. Irritation may cause itching, burning, gritty eyes, redness at the lash line, flakes or sleeves around lashes, and lashes that become brittle or fall out. Similar complaints can occur with blepharitis, allergy, dry eye, infection, or rosacea, so symptoms alone cannot confirm demodicosis. Rubbing the eyes can further inflame delicate skin and transfer irritants.

Wash hands before touching the eye area. Use a clean, warm compress and gentle eyelid cleaning method recommended by a clinician, then pat dry without scrubbing. Pause eye makeup and contact lenses if they worsen irritation, and replace old eye cosmetics rather than sharing them. A doctor may recommend a specific cleanser or prescription treatment after examining the lashes and eyelid margins. Keep facial and scalp products away from the eyes unless labelled for that area.

Arrange an eye or dermatology review for recurring crusting, lash loss, persistent gritty discomfort, or symptoms that do not settle with gentle care. Seek urgent assessment for eye pain, vision change, strong light sensitivity, marked swelling, pus, or redness spreading beyond the eyelid. Do not use leftover eye drops or skin medicines without advice.

Ask whether the lash line needs microscopy or another examination, whether dry eye or rosacea is also present, which cleaning routine is safe, and how long to continue treatment before reassessment.
