Demodex mites and eyelashes

The mites live near follicles, and symptoms may be most noticeable at the lash roots. You may see cylindrical debris around lashes, flaky skin, watery eyes, burning, or a feeling that something is in the eye. These signs overlap with blepharitis, allergy, dry eye, and infection, so they do not prove a mite problem.

Avoid pulling lashes, rubbing the eyes, or sharing eye makeup. A clinician can examine the lash line with magnification and check the eye surface if needed.

Wash your hands before touching the eye area. Clean the lid margins gently with a clinician-approved eyelid cleanser or plain lukewarm water, keeping products out of the eye. Remove eye makeup and replace old mascara or liner rather than trying to clean contaminated cosmetics. Do not use tea tree oil, shampoo, or other household substances directly on the eyelids.

Book an assessment if crusting, lash loss, irritation, or recurrent redness continues despite gentle hygiene. Seek urgent eye care for significant pain, light sensitivity, marked swelling, discharge, injury, or any change in vision. Prompt assessment helps protect the cornea and rule out infection.
