What should you know about demodex human mites?

Demodex folliculorum is linked mainly with facial follicles, while related mites can occupy oil-rich areas. A person may have no symptoms. When the skin reacts, possible findings include itching, redness, rough texture, small bumps, follicle-centered scale, or eyelash debris. These findings overlap with rosacea, dermatitis, folliculitis, and eye conditions, so seeing a mite on a sample does not automatically explain every symptom.

Wash gently, avoid abrasive scrubs, and remove eye makeup carefully if the eyelids are irritated. Do not share prescribed medicines or use animal products on your face. A clinician can decide whether treatment is needed and may choose a topical medicine, an eyelid hygiene routine, or another plan based on the affected area. Follow directions around the eyes closely and stop products that cause marked burning or swelling.

Arrange medical review for persistent facial irritation, recurring eyelid debris, or symptoms that do not settle with gentle care. Seek urgent assessment for eye pain, vision change, strong light sensitivity, facial swelling, spreading redness, pus, or fever.
