What should you know about dementia treatments?

Short answer
Dementia treatments aim to clarify the cause, support thinking and daily function, and manage changing care needs.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What treatment can involve
Dementia is a group of symptoms affecting memory, reasoning, communication or everyday activities. A clinician may look for reversible contributors, review medicines, and assess mood, sleep, hearing and general health before discussing a care plan.
Some people are offered medicine for particular types or stages of dementia. These medicines may help symptoms for a time, but they do not restore lost abilities. Non-medicine support can include routines, memory aids, movement, meaningful activities, home-safety changes and support for carers.
Practical next steps
Arrange a GP consultation if memory or behaviour changes are affecting work, driving, medicines, finances or personal care. Bring a list of medicines and examples of changes noticed, including when they began and whether they fluctuate.
Ask about a cognitive assessment, blood tests or other checks, and whether referral is appropriate. Keep regular routines, label important items, simplify tasks and involve the person in decisions while they can express preferences.
When to seek prompt care
Seek urgent medical help for sudden confusion, new weakness, trouble speaking, a severe headache, a fall with injury, fever with marked drowsiness, or a rapid change from the person’s usual state. These features can signal a problem other than gradual dementia.
Contact the treating clinician promptly if eating, drinking, walking, continence or taking essential medicines becomes difficult. New urinary incontinence with confusion or pain also deserves assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Which cause of the symptoms are you considering? What assessments are needed? Would medicine help this person, and what side effects should we watch for? Which changes at home could improve safety? Who should we contact if symptoms change?
