Deep remission in ulcerative colitis: what to know

Feeling well is encouraging, but it does not by itself prove that inflammation has settled. Your clinician may combine your symptoms with blood or stool tests, examination and sometimes a bowel camera test. The aim is to protect the bowel lining and reduce the chance of a flare. Remission can change, so a planned review remains useful even when bowel habits feel normal.

Take prescribed medicine on the agreed schedule and discuss side effects before stopping or changing it. Keep a simple record of bowel frequency, urgency, bleeding, abdominal pain and energy. Attend monitoring appointments and ask which tests are due. A GP consultation can help with new symptoms or with coordinating specialist care. Do not start supplements or anti-inflammatory pain medicines without checking that they suit you.

Contact your care team promptly for new rectal bleeding, persistent diarrhoea, worsening abdominal pain, fever, marked weakness or signs of dehydration such as very little urine or dizziness. Seek urgent help for severe or rapidly worsening pain, a swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, fainting or heavy bleeding. These warning signs need assessment even if you previously had deep remission.
