What should you know about deep morphea?

The area may feel firm, tight, thickened, or bound down. Colour can change before or during hardening, and the border may be subtle. Deep disease can occur on a limb, trunk, or face and may cross a joint. The condition is not the same as systemic scleroderma, although a clinician will assess the wider picture and document movement, depth, and progression.

Book a dermatology assessment rather than relying on moisturiser alone. Examination may be followed by imaging or a biopsy when the depth or diagnosis is unclear. Treatment is selected according to activity, site, and tissue involvement; options may include prescribed anti-inflammatory therapy, topical calcineurin inhibitors for selected superficial areas, or phototherapy such as narrowband UVB when appropriate. Gentle stretching can help preserve movement, but painful forceful massage should be avoided.

Seek prompt review if a patch is enlarging, becomes increasingly tight, crosses a joint, causes weakness, restricts movement, or affects the face or scalp. New pain, numbness, ulceration, or difficulty using an arm or leg also deserves timely assessment. Rapid change should not be managed only with cosmetic products.

Ask whether the disease appears active, which layers are involved, whether testing is needed, how movement will be monitored, and what signs should prompt an earlier follow-up.
