What should you know about deep hiccups?

Short answer
Deep hiccups are repeated involuntary diaphragm spasms that may follow stomach irritation, reflux, swallowing air, or another illness.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why hiccups may feel deep
The diaphragm is a breathing muscle below the lungs. A sudden contraction followed by closure at the voice box creates the hiccup sound; forceful contractions may be felt in the chest or upper abdomen. Eating quickly, a large meal, fizzy drinks, alcohol, sudden temperature changes, laughter, or emotional stress can trigger short episodes.
Hiccups that continue or keep returning can be linked with acid reflux, gastritis, medicines, or irritation affecting the nerves that control the diaphragm. The sensation does not identify the cause by itself, so duration and accompanying symptoms matter.
Ways to settle an episode
Pause eating, sit upright, breathe slowly, and take small sips of water. Avoid fizzy drinks, alcohol, very large meals, and rapid eating while symptoms are active. Do not use frightening techniques or anything that could make you choke. If reflux symptoms accompany the hiccups, note the relationship to meals and lying down.
Contact a clinician if hiccups interfere with sleep, eating, drinking, work, or breathing, or if they persist beyond a short episode. A clinician can review medicines and consider treatment for an underlying stomach or reflux problem.
When to seek urgent care
Seek urgent help for hiccups with severe chest or abdominal pain, serious breathing difficulty, repeated vomiting, confusion, weakness, fainting, or inability to swallow fluids. Get prompt advice if a new persistent episode occurs with severe illness or follows a significant injury.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether reflux, gastritis, a medicine, or another condition could be contributing; whether you need tests; and which treatment is appropriate if the hiccups continue.
