What should you know about deep circles under eyes?

A hollow beneath the lower eyelid can cast a shadow that appears darker in some lighting. Thin skin may show blood vessels, while sun exposure or inflammation can increase brown or grey colour. Rubbing from eczema, allergies, or dryness can also make the area look darker over time. A clinician examines the skin, eyelid contour, swelling, and colour before recommending treatment.

Tear trough hollows describe a contour change, whereas dark circles describe an appearance. They can occur together but are not interchangeable. A photograph, sleep change, or cosmetic product cannot reliably identify the cause on its own.

Use gentle fragrance-free products, avoid rubbing the eyelids, and protect the area from sunlight with suitable sunscreen and sunglasses. Treating irritation or atopic dermatitis may improve darkening when inflammation is contributing.
