Decompression table for the back: what to know

Short answer
A decompression table provides controlled traction for selected back problems, but a professional assessment should guide its use.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Treatment type
- Non-operative traction delivered through a supported table.
- Assessment first
- The cause and pattern of back pain determine whether it is suitable.
What happens on the table
You usually lie on a divided table while straps or supports stabilise part of the body. The table then applies a measured pulling force, sometimes in cycles, to change how the lower back is loaded. A session should be comfortable enough for you to communicate throughout; sharp, escalating, or spreading symptoms are not a target.
Relief after traction can be temporary and does not identify the underlying cause. Back pain may involve muscles, joints, discs, or nerves. Degenerative changes such as lumbar spondylosis may be relevant, but an examination is needed to connect an image or diagnosis with your symptoms.
Using it thoughtfully
Ask the clinician to explain the proposed goal, the expected number of sessions, and how progress will be measured. Mention spine operations, osteoporosis, recent injury, pregnancy, inflammatory conditions, or unexplained symptoms before treatment. Do not increase the force or frequency yourself.
A broader plan often includes walking or other tolerated activity, mobility work, strengthening, and advice about lifting and positions. Note whether daily tasks, sleep, or sitting improve rather than judging the table only by how you feel immediately afterward.
Warning signs
Get urgent care for new bladder or bowel difficulties, numbness in the saddle area, or rapidly progressing weakness in a leg. Prompt medical review is also appropriate with fever, a major fall or collision, a history of cancer, or severe unremitting night pain. Tell the therapist immediately if traction brings new weakness or numbness.
Useful questions
What finding makes a decompression table reasonable for me? What alternatives should I try first? How will the force be selected? Which symptoms mean I should stop, and when should my diagnosis be reassessed?

Questions people ask
Will the table fix my back?
It may ease symptoms for some people, but it does not guarantee correction of a disc, joint, muscle, or nerve problem.
What should I feel during treatment?
You may feel a gentle pulling or changing pressure. Report sharp pain, worsening pain, new tingling, or weakness rather than pushing through it.
