Dealing with heat rash

Short answer
Dealing with heat rash means cooling the skin, keeping it dry, reducing friction and seeking medical advice if the rash is severe, infected or persistent.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical trigger
- Heat, humidity and trapped sweat

What heat rash is
Heat rash, also called prickly heat, occurs when blocked sweat ducts trap sweat near the skin surface. It may cause small bumps, prickling, itching or redness, especially in skin folds and areas covered by tight clothing. You can compare these features with [Heat Rash](/conditions/heat-rash/), [Skin Bumps](/symptoms/skin-bumps/) and [Skin Redness](/symptoms/skin-redness/).
The rash often appears after hot, humid conditions, exercise or prolonged sweating. Babies, people who are less mobile and anyone wearing occlusive clothing may need extra attention to cooling and airflow.
What to do at home
Move to a cool place, take a lukewarm shower and pat the skin dry. Wear loose, breathable clothing and change out of damp garments. A cool compress can ease prickling; avoid scratching, heavy ointments and fragranced products that may further block ducts or irritate the skin. Keep folds dry without rubbing them.
If dryness or irritation remains, a clinician may recommend a suitable [Emollient Therapy](/treatments/medical-dermatology/emollient-therapy/). Do not apply a steroid cream to a large or infected-looking area without advice; [Topical Corticosteroids](/treatments/medical-dermatology/topical-corticosteroids/) need appropriate product and duration.
When to seek care
Contact a clinician if the rash does not settle after cooling, keeps returning, or is difficult to distinguish from another [Skin Rash](/symptoms/skin-rash/). Seek prompt care for pus, increasing warmth, spreading redness, significant pain, fever, dizziness or confusion. A baby or vulnerable person with a widespread rash should be assessed sooner.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what is causing the rash, whether infection or eczema is also possible, which cleanser or moisturiser is appropriate, how to protect skin folds, and which symptoms mean you should return urgently.

Questions people ask
Should I use a thick cream on heat rash?
Heavy products can trap sweat, so cooling and airflow are usually preferable; ask a clinician before applying a thick ointment to the affected area.
Can heat rash become infected?
Scratching can damage the skin and allow infection, especially if pain, warmth, pus, spreading redness or fever develops.
