Dark underarms since childhood: what to know

Some people naturally have deeper colour in body folds. Others develop pigment after friction, eczema, shaving, or repeated product irritation. If the skin is also thicker and velvety, particularly at the neck or groin, a clinician may consider acanthosis nigricans and related metabolic factors. A flat, stable patch is different from a new rash, scaling, or painful fold infection.

Take note of whether the colour has changed, whether the surface feels thick, and whether relatives have a similar pattern. Use mild fragrance-free products, avoid scrubbing, and reduce rubbing from clothing. Children should not use adult bleaching creams or clinic treatments without specialist advice. A dermatologist can confirm the diagnosis and discuss age-appropriate options if appearance is a concern.

Arrange a review if the darkening is spreading, newly thickened, itchy, painful, cracked, scaly, or associated with odour or discharge. Seek medical advice when similar changes appear on several folds or alongside increased thirst, frequent urination, or other health changes. Long duration is reassuring only when the pattern is stable and symptom-free; it does not replace examination when the appearance changes.

Ask whether the skin is simply pigmented or thickened, whether any checks are needed, and which treatment is safe for the person’s age, skin tone, and sensitivity.
