Covering dark underarms

Underarm colour may deepen after rubbing, shaving, deodorant irritation, or [Intertrigo](/conditions/intertrigo/). Pigment left after inflammation is called [Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation](/conditions/post-inflammatory-hyperpigmentation/). Covering a smooth, calm area is different from covering skin that is sore, cracked, scaly, wet, or infected. Thick or velvety darkening, especially in more than one fold, merits a medical review rather than cosmetic masking alone.

For temporary coverage, choose a fragrance-free, non-comedogenic body concealer, test a small area first, and remove it gently at the end of the day. Do not apply makeup over broken or inflamed skin, and stop if burning or itching develops. Ask which ingredients are least likely to irritate, whether the skin is ready for a cosmetic procedure, and whether treatment should address inflammation or pigment first.
