Dark spots under the armpits: what to know

Shaving, tight clothing, sweating, and repeated rubbing can inflame delicate underarm skin. Deodorant or fragrance sensitivity may leave redness followed by post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. A flat patch with scale or itch may have a different cause, such as tinea versicolor. Darkening that feels thicker or velvety, especially in more than one fold, should be examined rather than treated only as a cosmetic concern.

Notice whether both sides are involved, whether the change followed a new product or hair-removal method, and whether there is pain, odour, a lump, rash, or drainage. These details help distinguish pigment from an active skin problem.

Pause fragranced products that sting, cleanse gently after sweating, pat dry, and choose loose breathable clothing. Use a clean shaving tool with lubrication, avoid shaving over irritated skin, and do not scrub or scratch the folds. A simple photograph can help track change.

If pigment persists, a clinician can assess the cause before discussing a skin brightening treatment, chemical peel, or picosecond laser treatment. Procedures in a friction-prone fold require careful selection and aftercare.

Book a medical review for persistent, spreading, thickened, itchy, scaly, painful, or recurrent darkening. Seek prompt care if there is rapid change, a new lump, open skin, pus, marked tenderness, or bleeding. Widespread darkening or similar changes on the neck or other folds also merits assessment.

Ask whether irritation, infection, pigment change, or thickened skin is responsible; which hair-removal and deodorant choices are gentlest; and whether testing or treatment is needed.
