Dark Spots on Skin Appearing Suddenly: What to Know

A darker mark may develop after a pimple, rash, cut, burn or cosmetic irritation; this is called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Sun-exposed areas can develop sun spots, while melasma often creates broader, fairly even brown patches, commonly on the face. A fine scale, mild itch or several lighter and darker patches on the trunk can point towards tinea versicolor, a superficial fungal condition.

Colour alone cannot identify the cause. Record when you first noticed the mark, whether it is changing in size or shade, and whether it is flat, raised, scaly, sore or bleeding. Take a clear photograph in consistent lighting to help compare changes. A clinician may examine the skin closely and ask about new products, medicines, sun exposure, recent inflammation and relevant medical history.

Use broad-spectrum sun protection and cover the area when outdoors, because ultraviolet exposure can deepen pigmentation. Keep skincare gentle: avoid scrubbing, picking, bleaching mixtures and unprescribed strong creams. If the spot appeared after irritation, pause the suspected product and use a bland moisturiser while the skin settles.

Book a routine dermatology appointment if the mark does not settle, keeps multiplying, or you cannot link it to a clear trigger. Treatment depends on the diagnosis. Options may include treating an underlying infection or inflammation; selected pigment concerns may later be considered for chemical peel, skin brightening treatment or picosecond laser treatment after professional assessment.

Arrange prompt medical review for a spot that is rapidly changing, has an irregular outline or several colours, becomes persistently painful or itchy, forms a sore, crusts or bleeds without healing. Seek urgent care for rapidly spreading darkening with severe illness, blistering, facial swelling or breathing difficulty, especially after a medicine or product exposure.

Do not try to remove a changing lesion with a peel, laser or home remedy before it has been assessed. A new mark may be harmless, but examination is the safest way to decide whether it needs observation, treatment or further investigation.
