Dark spots on my buttocks: what should I know?

Friction from sitting, tight clothing, or exercise can irritate buttock skin. Spots may also follow ingrown hairs, follicle bumps, insect bites, or a rash; pigment can remain after the original problem has settled. Look for clues such as rough bumps, pus, scale, itch, tenderness, or a mark that is flat and smooth. Choose loose, breathable clothing, change out of damp exercise wear, and wash gently without scrubbing. Avoid picking bumps and pause shaving or waxing if these provoke irritation. Use a plain moisturiser on dry skin, but do not place strong acids or bleaching mixtures on broken or inflamed skin. If marks persist, a clinician can decide whether the trigger needs treatment first and whether options such as a chemical peel, skin brightening treatment, or picosecond laser treatment fit the diagnosis and your skin type.

Arrange a review for recurrent painful bumps, drainage, scarring, persistent itch, spreading scale, or spots that keep appearing without an obvious trigger. Seek prompt care for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, fever, or a warm swollen area. Have a solitary spot examined if it changes in shape or colour, bleeds, crusts repeatedly, or does not heal.
