Dark spots on my armpits: what should I know?

Underarm skin is exposed to friction, hair removal, sweat, and deodorants, so irritation can leave darker pigment after a rash or small cuts settle. A flat patch may be pigment change, whereas skin that feels thicker and velvety, especially on both sides or at other folds, should be assessed rather than treated only with a brightening cream. Itch, scale, burning, odour, or a sharply defined rash may suggest an active skin condition. Note when the change began and whether a new product, shaving method, or medication preceded it.

Pause fragranced or stinging products and wash gently with lukewarm water. Give irritated skin a break from shaving or waxing, wear breathable clothing, and avoid scrubbing or lemon-based remedies. Once the skin is calm, a clinician can decide whether pigment care is suitable and whether a chemical peel, skin brightening treatment, or picosecond laser treatment is appropriate. These procedures are not interchangeable and can worsen irritation if the underlying rash has not been addressed.

Book an assessment if the skin becomes thick, velvety, rapidly darker, persistently itchy, scaly, painful, or develops lumps or drainage. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, marked tenderness, fever, or an open wound. A new, persistent change in several skin folds also merits review because the pattern may provide a clue beyond local deodorant or shaving irritation.
