What should you know about dark spots on inner lips?

The inner lips are mucosal tissue, so ordinary sun spots and many facial pigment conditions are less typical there. A darker area may follow lip biting, a burn from hot food, dental friction, inflammation, or contact with a product. Some people also have stable natural variation in oral pigment.

Look for a clear border, an even or mixed colour, swelling, ulceration, thickening, tenderness, or bleeding. Note whether the spot is on the inner lower lip, cheek lining, gum, or tongue, and whether it is solitary or accompanied by other mouth changes. Do not try to scrape it away.

Avoid tobacco, irritating mouth products, very hot foods, and repeated biting while the area is being observed. Use gentle oral care and arrange an examination with a dentist, doctor, or dermatologist if the mark persists or has no obvious trigger. Cosmetic lightening products made for skin should not be used inside the mouth.

Procedures such as chemical peels, skin brightening treatment, or picosecond laser treatment are not automatically suitable for mucosal tissue. A clinician must first identify the tissue involved and the cause before discussing any treatment.

Arrange prompt assessment for a mark that enlarges, changes colour or outline, becomes raised, ulcerates, bleeds, or remains sore. Seek urgent help if mouth swelling affects swallowing or breathing, or if widespread mouth sores appear with fever or a severe reaction.

Ask whether the mark is on mucosa or the outer lip, whether dental friction, biting, tobacco, or a product could contribute, and whether referral or sampling is needed. Ask which changes should prompt an earlier appointment and what products to avoid.
