Dark spots in the nose: what to know

The nose receives frequent sun exposure and is also exposed to rubbing, masks, glasses, tissues, shaving, and fragranced products. Small brown marks may remain after a spot, rash, or minor injury has settled; this is called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. A flat, slowly changing patch can also fit sun spots or melasma. Scaling, itch, or several lighter and darker patches may point toward another skin condition such as tinea versicolor. Colour alone cannot identify the cause, so note whether the area is flat, raised, sore, scaly, bleeding, or changing.

Use a gentle cleanser, avoid picking or scrubbing, and pause products that sting. Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen to exposed skin and use shade or a hat when outdoors. Do not apply strong lightening agents, acids, or household remedies inside the nostrils; delicate tissue can become irritated.
