Dark spots on the knees

Short answer
Dark spots on the knees commonly reflect pressure, friction, dryness, or earlier inflammation, and treatment starts with identifying the trigger.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Frequent triggers
- Kneeling, friction, dryness, pressure, and healed irritation
- Gentle care
- Moisturise and reduce rubbing instead of scrubbing
- Check promptly
- Rapid change, bleeding, pain, crusting, or poor healing
Why knees become darker
Knees are exposed to bending, kneeling, clothing friction, dryness, and repeated pressure. Thickened or rough skin may darken after irritation, while a flat mark can remain after a scrape, rash, or insect bite. A clinician considers whether both knees are affected, whether the surface is scaly or thick, and whether similar changes occur on elbows or other folds.
A wider pattern may point to a pigment condition such as Melasma or another cause, while Sun Spots are linked to exposed skin. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause, so avoid assuming that every dark knee needs the same product.
A gentler knee routine
Use a mild cleanser, moisturise regularly, and reduce kneeling or rough fabric when possible. Apply sunscreen when knees are exposed. Avoid pumice stones, harsh scrubs, and repeated rubbing: small injuries can leave more pigment, especially in skin that marks easily.
If roughness, eczema, or another rash is present, treat that problem first with professional guidance. For stable pigment on healthy skin, a dermatologist may discuss Skin Brightening Treatment, Chemical Peel, or Picosecond Laser Treatment. The choice depends on skin tone, thickness, cause, and the risk of irritation.
When to seek care
Have a clinician examine a spot that changes quickly, has an irregular edge or mixed colours, bleeds, crusts, becomes painful, or fails to heal. Seek review for widespread new darkening, marked thickening, persistent itch, or pigment with swelling and a rash. Do not delay care while trying stronger exfoliants.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether pressure, dryness, inflammation, or a pigment disorder is responsible; what routine will soften the surface safely; and which treatment is suitable for your skin tone.

Questions people ask
Does kneeling cause dark knees?
Repeated pressure and friction can irritate knee skin and contribute to roughness and darker pigment.
Will exfoliating remove dark knee patches?
Aggressive exfoliation can worsen irritation and pigment. A gentle routine and diagnosis-based treatment are safer approaches.
