Dark spots on the feet

Short answer
Dark spots on the feet need a look at their colour, texture, symptoms, and cause before choosing treatment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Look at
- Location, texture, scale, and nail involvement
- Reduce triggers
- Moisture, shoe rubbing, pressure, and picking
- Urgent clues
- Change, bleeding, pain, swelling, or a non-healing wound
What may be behind foot spots
Foot pigment can darken after a blister, cut, insect bite, eczema flare, shoe rubbing, or repeated pressure. A flat brown mark differs from a thick callus, a scaly patch, or a spot beneath a nail. Moisture between the toes can also support fungal skin changes, while pigment conditions such as Tinea Versicolor may cause lighter or darker areas elsewhere.
Note whether the mark is on the sole, top of the foot, toe, or nail; whether it is single or multiple; and whether it is growing, itchy, scaly, tender, or bleeding. Photos taken in consistent light can help a clinician compare change.
Practical foot care
Keep feet clean and dry, change damp socks, choose shoes that do not rub, and avoid picking at peeling skin. Do not use strong acids or unlabelled lightening creams on broken skin. If there is scale or itch, have the cause checked rather than treating pigment alone.
Once the skin is healthy, a clinician can discuss options for persistent pigment. Depending on the diagnosis and location, these may include Skin Brightening Treatment, a Chemical Peel, or Picosecond Laser Treatment. Foot skin and nails need individual assessment because irritation can worsen discolouration.
When to seek care
Book a prompt assessment for a new or changing dark spot, especially one with an irregular border, multiple colours, bleeding, crusting, or persistent pain. Seek care sooner if redness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, or a wound that does not heal accompanies the pigment. People with reduced foot sensation or circulation should have persistent marks checked early.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the spot is pigment, a callus, infection, or a nail change; whether testing is needed; and which foot-care products are safe for the affected surface.

Questions people ask
Can shoes cause dark spots on feet?
Repeated rubbing or pressure can irritate skin and leave darker pigment after the inflammation settles.
Are dark spots on a toenail the same as skin pigment?
Not necessarily. A nail mark has different possible causes and should be assessed if it is new, changing, or extending onto nearby skin.
