Dark Spots Around the Nose: What to Know

Darkening beside the nostrils often follows dryness, rubbing, frequent wiping, or a rash. Redness, flaking, or an oily scale may indicate ongoing irritation or dermatitis; pigment can remain after it improves. Symmetrical brown patches over the nose and cheeks can occur with melasma, while a single defined mark may be a sun spot. Tinea versicolor is more often scaly patches on the trunk, so location and texture help separate possibilities.

Wash gently, pat dry, and apply a simple moisturiser around—not inside—the nostrils. Reduce rubbing from tissues and avoid fragranced products or harsh scrubs. Use sun protection on exposed skin because ultraviolet exposure can deepen pigment. If scaling, burning, or recurrent redness continues, a dermatologist can assess the cause before discussing prescribed care or procedures such as skin brightening treatment.

Arrange prompt review for rapid change, bleeding, crusting, ulceration, significant pain, or a sore that does not heal. Seek advice sooner if swelling affects breathing, redness spreads, or discharge develops. Persistent flaking or a mark that does not settle after the suspected irritant is removed also merits examination.

Ask whether the area looks like irritation, melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, or another condition; which cleanser and moisturiser are suitable; and whether treatment could worsen inflammation or pigment in your skin.
