Dark Spots Around the Lips: What to Know

Lip licking, saliva, fragranced products, toothpaste, cosmetics, or shaving can irritate the surrounding skin. Once irritation settles, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation may remain. Symmetrical brown areas around the mouth can occur with melasma, while a distinct mark on sun-exposed skin may be a sun spot. Cracking, burning, scaling, or small bumps suggest an active skin problem rather than pigment alone.

Use a bland, fragrance-free moisturiser and avoid licking, scrubbing, picking, and newly introduced lip or facial products. Protect the upper lip and surrounding skin from sunlight; reapply suitable sunscreen as directed. Do not put strong lightening ingredients on the lips or broken skin. A clinician can identify the trigger and discuss treatment such as prescribed topical care, a chemical peel, or another supervised option when appropriate.

Seek care promptly for a spot that bleeds, crusts, ulcerates, becomes painful, or changes quickly. Arrange an assessment for persistent cracking, swelling, blisters, marked itch, or a rash extending beyond the mouth. A new or changing spot on the lip itself deserves examination, particularly if it does not heal.
