Dark Spots and Pigmentation Treatment

A brown mark after acne or irritation is approached differently from melasma, sun spots or a scaly infection. The clinician considers whether pigment sits near the surface, whether the trigger continues, and how readily your skin becomes irritated. Stronger treatment is not automatically better; irritation can make post-inflammatory pigmentation more noticeable.

An examination can also separate flat pigment from a scar with altered texture. Tell the clinician about pregnancy, breastfeeding, medicines, allergies, previous reactions and products used on the area.

Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen, shade and a hat support every treatment plan. Gentle cleansing and moisturising help the skin tolerate care. Depending on the diagnosis, a clinician may recommend a prescription cream, a Chemical Peel, Skin Brightening Treatment or Picosecond Laser Treatment. Procedures require suitable settings, preparation and aftercare; do not combine home acids, scrubs or lightening products without guidance. Control acne, eczema or another active trigger to reduce new marks.

Have a spot assessed before cosmetic treatment if it is changing, asymmetrical, multicoloured, bleeding, crusted, tender or not healing. Prompt review is also sensible when pigmentation spreads quickly, develops with significant scale, or follows a new medicine. Treatment should wait until the cause is clear.

Ask which diagnosis is being treated, what improvement is realistic, how to prepare, which side effects need attention, what aftercare is required, and how to prevent the trigger from returning.
