Dark Spot at the Lip Corner: What to Know

Moisture, lip licking, drooling during sleep, cosmetics, and toothpaste can irritate the corner. Cracking, soreness, or a recurring rash may occur with inflammation at the angle of the mouth, and pigment can remain after it settles. A flat mark on nearby skin may instead reflect post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, sun exposure, or another cause such as melasma. A clinician may need to inspect the lips and surrounding skin because colour alone is not diagnostic.

Keep the corner gently clean and dry, stop licking it, and apply a bland protective ointment if the skin is cracked. Pause fragranced lip products and introduce products one at a time after the area settles. Use lip sun protection outdoors. Do not apply steroid, antifungal, acid, or bleaching products without advice. Once the cause is clear, a dermatologist may discuss a chemical peel, skin brightening treatment, or picosecond laser treatment, with care around the delicate lip area.

Arrange an assessment if the corner stays cracked, crusted, swollen, painful, or repeatedly bleeds, or if the mark grows or develops several colours. Seek prompt review for a non-healing sore or a persistent ulcer. These features can have different explanations, so examination is more useful than trying multiple active products.
