What should you know about dark red under eyes?

The thin skin around the eyes can show redness more clearly than other areas. Colour that is present on both sides without discomfort may be different from a sudden, itchy or swollen change on one side.

A new eye cream, cleanser, makeup product, sunscreen, or hair product can irritate the skin or trigger contact dermatitis. Itching, scaling, dryness, or a burning sensation can also occur with atopic dermatitis around the eyes. Frequent rubbing from allergies or dryness may deepen the colour and make the skin tender.

Red-purple shading can be more noticeable when blood vessels show through thin skin, or when hollows beneath the eyes create a shadow. This can coexist with dark circles and does not identify one cause by colour alone. Do not apply steroid or bleaching products close to the eye unless a clinician has advised you to do so.

Pause recently introduced products around the eyes and use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing, and use a cool, clean compress for short periods if the skin feels warm or irritated. Arrange a dermatology or primary-care assessment if the change persists, keeps returning, or comes with scaling and itch.
