What Should You Know About Dark Marks Under Eyes?

Dark marks under the eyes can come from pigment, visible blood vessels, skin irritation, or shadows created by hollows, and the right treatment depends on the cause. Several factors can overlap, so a clinician may examine the colour, texture, surrounding skin, and whether the area changes with lighting or facial movement.

Brown or grey-brown colour may reflect increased pigment, including pigment left after irritation or repeated rubbing. A clinician can match treatment to the finding. Options may focus on calming dermatitis, reducing pigment, improving the appearance of visible vessels, or softening a hollow-related shadow. Under-eye filler is an injectable option for selected tear-trough hollows, but it is not a universal treatment for pigment or irritated skin.

Seek prompt medical advice if the colour change is new and affects one eye, or if it comes with swelling, significant pain, warmth, discharge, a rash spreading beyond the eye area, or any change in vision. Arrange a routine dermatology or primary-care review when the marks persist, keep returning, itch, or do not improve after you stop rubbing and simplify your skincare.
