Dark circles in pregnancy: what to know

Short answer
Dark circles in pregnancy may look stronger because of changing sleep, fluid balance, skin pigmentation, allergies or facial shadows; they are not specific to pregnancy alone.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why pregnancy can change their appearance
Pregnancy may bring interrupted sleep, nasal congestion, itch and sensitivity, all of which can increase rubbing or make under-eye vessels and shadows easier to see. Hormonal skin changes can also deepen pigmentation in some people. Morning puffiness may be more visible when fluid shifts overnight. A pre-existing tear-trough hollow can therefore look darker even though its structure has not changed.
Dark Circles by themselves do not diagnose a pregnancy complication. If the surrounding skin is itchy, dry or scaly, Atopic Dermatitis or another irritation may be contributing and deserves a tailored assessment.
Pregnancy-aware self-care
Keep skincare simple: use a gentle cleanser, an eye-area moisturiser that you already tolerate and broad-spectrum sun protection around the eyes. Do not rub itchy skin; ask your maternity clinician or pharmacist which allergy or itch treatments fit your pregnancy. A cool compress can ease puffiness, and side-sleeping guidance should follow your maternity team’s advice rather than online routines.
Avoid starting prescription creams, concentrated pigment treatments or cosmetic injections without clearance from the clinician managing your pregnancy. Under-Eye Filler can wait for an individual discussion after pregnancy; a stable hollow is not an urgent problem.
When to contact a clinician
Contact your maternity team promptly for sudden swelling of the face or around the eyes, severe headache, visual changes, high blood pressure concerns, or swelling with breathlessness. Seek eye or skin assessment for pain, marked redness, discharge, a one-sided change or a spreading rash. Persistent darkness with fatigue, paleness or other symptoms also merits a general health review rather than cosmetic treatment alone.
Useful questions
Ask which eye and allergy products are suitable now, whether itching suggests dermatitis, how to protect pigment-prone skin from sun, and when cosmetic procedures could be reconsidered after pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Questions people ask
Can pregnancy itself cause dark circles?
Pregnancy-related changes can make existing shadows or pigment more noticeable, but other causes such as rubbing and allergies are also possible.
Can I have under-eye injections while pregnant?
Discuss any elective injection with your maternity and dermatology clinicians; postponing cosmetic treatment is generally the cautious approach.
