Dark brown urine while taking antibiotics

Some antibiotics or their breakdown products can change urine colour. Illness itself may leave you dehydrated through fever, diarrhoea, vomiting, or poor appetite, making urine darker. Brown urine can also reflect blood, muscle pigment, or bile-related changes, so the colour should not be used to decide whether an antibiotic is working. The infection being treated, such as cellulitis, acute bronchitis, or another condition, may need separate review.

Read the medicine label and record its name, dose, start date, and the time the urine changed. Drink according to your clinician’s advice, and avoid taking leftover antibiotics or sharing treatment. Call the prescriber or pharmacist before the next dose if the colour change is new, striking, or paired with nausea, itching, rash, or unusual tiredness. They can decide whether examination or testing is appropriate.

Get urgent help for swelling of the lips or tongue, wheezing, trouble breathing, collapse, severe rash, confusion, inability to keep fluids down, or very little urine. Seek same-day assessment for yellow skin or eyes, severe abdominal or back pain, visible blood, or a high fever. Do not wait for the antibiotic course to finish when these symptoms appear.

Ask whether your specific antibiotic is known to alter urine colour, whether another medicine or supplement could interact, how to manage fluids during the illness, and what symptoms should prompt a medication change.
