Dark Armpit Skin Peeling: What to Know

Deodorant, shaving, friction, sweat, and fragranced products can inflame the underarm and leave darker pigment as the skin recovers. A dry, itchy, scaly rash may be dermatitis. Psoriasis can affect folds and may look smoother or more sharply outlined than typical scaling. Fungal infection can spread from nearby skin and may cause itch or a defined edge. Sunburn is less common in a covered armpit but can occur after exposure or treatment.

Stop new deodorants, acids, scrubs, and fragranced products until the skin settles. Wash with lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser, pat dry, and wear loose clothing. Avoid shaving or pulling off flakes. Do not apply steroid, antifungal, or lightening products without advice when the diagnosis is uncertain; the wrong product can mask the pattern or increase irritation.

Arrange a clinical review if peeling persists, returns repeatedly, spreads, smells unusual, or is accompanied by pain, cracks, bleeding, or significant itch. Seek prompt care for pus, fever, rapidly increasing redness, swelling, or severe tenderness. A clinician may need to inspect the fold and nearby skin to distinguish dermatitis, psoriasis, infection, and post-inflammatory colour.
