What should you know about dark and itchy underarms?

Deodorant, fragrance, shaving, tight clothing, and sweat can irritate the fold or trigger contact dermatitis. Rubbing and moisture can contribute to intertrigo. After a rash settles, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation may leave the underarm darker even when the itch has improved. Persistent itch with thickened or scaly skin needs a closer look.

The dark colour does not by itself identify the cause. Note when itching began, whether a product changed, and whether both sides are affected. Avoid assuming pigmentation is cosmetic while the skin remains inflamed.

Pause new deodorants, fragranced washes, and harsh exfoliants. Clean gently, dry thoroughly, wear loose breathable clothing, and avoid scratching. Do not apply bleaching creams or steroid combinations without medical guidance, especially on thin underarm skin.

A clinician may recommend treatment for the rash first. Once the skin is calm, options for residual colour can include hydroquinone treatment, a chemical peel, or laser toning; suitability depends on the diagnosis and skin tone. Laser hair removal may reduce shaving-related irritation for some people.

Seek assessment if itching persists, the rash spreads, skin cracks or weeps, or there is pain, warmth, swelling, pus, or fever. Prompt review is also sensible for a one-sided change, a firm lump, or sudden marked darkening. Stop a suspected product and seek help if swelling affects breathing or the face.
