What should you know about dangerous fever temp?

A temperature reading is affected by where and how it was taken. A fever may occur with infections such as Acute Bronchitis, Bronchiolitis, Brucellosis, Cellulitis, Chickenpox, Common Cold, COVID-19, or Croup, but the reading itself cannot tell you which condition is present. A person who is alert, drinking, and breathing comfortably may need different advice from someone with a lower reading but severe symptoms.

Write down the temperature, time, device, measurement site, medicines given, and changes in behaviour. This information helps a clinician make a safer assessment.

Encourage fluids if the person is awake and able to swallow, allow rest, and avoid heavy clothing or strenuous activity. Follow the label or professional instructions for any fever medicine, checking age, weight, allergies, and existing conditions. Do not give several cold or pain products together unless their ingredients have been checked. Recheck after a reasonable interval and focus on how the person looks and functions.

Arrange urgent help for a seizure, confusion, severe drowsiness, difficulty breathing, fainting, severe headache with a stiff neck, blue or grey skin, signs of serious dehydration, or a rapidly worsening illness. Babies, older adults, pregnant people, and those with reduced immunity may need earlier assessment even when symptoms seem mild.

Ask whether the measurement is reliable, whether the fever pattern suggests an examination, which treatment is suitable, and what exact symptoms should prompt emergency help.
