What should you know about dandy fever?

Dengue is spread by infected mosquitoes. The illness may begin with a sudden fever and a generally unwell feeling. Some people also develop pain behind the eyes, nausea, a rash, or bleeding from the nose or gums. Fever alone does not identify the cause: respiratory infections such as Acute Bronchitis, Bronchiolitis, Common Cold, COVID-19, or Croup can also produce fever. Other infections, including Brucellosis, Cellulitis, or Chickenpox, may need different care.

A clinician considers your symptoms, examination, travel or mosquito exposure, and the timing of illness. Testing may be recommended when dengue is possible.

Rest, drink fluids regularly, and keep a record of your temperature and new symptoms. Use only fever medicine that a clinician or pharmacist considers suitable for you. Avoid taking aspirin or anti-inflammatory pain medicines unless a healthcare professional specifically advises them, because dengue can be associated with bleeding. Prevent mosquito bites while unwell so mosquitoes are less likely to spread infection to others.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for suspected dengue, especially after travel or mosquito exposure. Seek urgent help for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, unusual bleeding, marked sleepiness or agitation, breathing difficulty, faintness, inability to drink, or noticeably reduced urination. Symptoms can change as fever settles, so feeling cooler does not always mean the illness is resolving.
