What should you know about a cuticle lifted from the nail?

The cuticle is a protective seal at the base of the nail. It can lift or split after picking, manicures, chemicals, repeated wet work, or injury. If the nail plate itself looks white or hollow because it has pulled away from the nail bed, this is nail separation rather than a simple cuticle problem.

Nail fungus and nail psoriasis are two conditions that can contribute to nail separation, but they are not the only possibilities. Eczema, inflammation, medicines, and repeated pressure can also alter the nail. Colour, texture, pain, and whether one or several nails are involved help guide assessment.

Keep the nail trimmed without cutting into attached skin. Do not tear, scrape, glue, or force the lifted area back down. Keep hands dry when possible, use protective gloves for cleaning, and pause artificial nails, polish, and harsh removers until the cause is clearer.

Wash gently and dry carefully beneath any safely accessible free edge. Do not share nail tools. A clinician may test for fungus or examine for psoriasis before recommending treatment. Nail growth is gradual, so improvement is judged as healthy nail advances from the base rather than by an instant change in the lifted portion.

Book an appointment if separation persists, spreads, returns, or affects several nails. Seek prompt care for increasing pain, pus, swelling, warmth, fever, or a dark area that was not caused by an obvious injury.
