What should you know about cure for stasis dermatitis?

Stasis dermatitis affects the lower legs when fluid and blood collect because veins are not returning blood efficiently. The skin may become itchy, dry, scaly, red-brown, swollen, or tender, and small cracks can allow infection. Varicose veins may be part of the underlying circulation problem, but other vein or heart conditions can also contribute. A clinician should assess the legs before compression is chosen, particularly if circulation in the arteries is reduced.

Use a bland moisturiser regularly, wash gently, and avoid scratching or fragranced products on irritated skin. Elevating the legs, moving regularly, and following a prescribed compression plan may reduce fluid build-up. Topical corticosteroids can calm an inflamed flare when prescribed for the appropriate area and duration. Treating problematic veins, sometimes with sclerotherapy, may be considered after a vascular assessment. Do not apply tight compression without advice if you have significant arterial disease, numbness, or an unexplained swollen leg.

Seek prompt care for rapidly increasing one-sided swelling, warmth, severe pain, pus, spreading redness, fever, or an open ulcer. Sudden breathlessness or chest pain is an emergency. A leg that becomes suddenly pale, cold, or numb also needs urgent assessment rather than home treatment.

Ask whether your veins and arterial circulation need testing, what compression level is suitable, and how to use it safely. Clarify the steroid schedule, moisturiser choice, warning signs of infection, and whether a vein procedure could help the underlying cause.
