Short answer

A sprained wrist often improves with protection, swelling control and progressive movement, but severe pain or loss of function needs assessment to exclude a fracture.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a wrist sprain is

A wrist sprain is an injury to one or more ligaments that support the wrist bones. It can cause wrist pain, tenderness, swelling, bruising and reduced grip or movement. A fall onto an outstretched hand can injure a ligament, but similar pain can come from a small fracture or tendon injury, so symptoms alone cannot confirm the diagnosis. Examination and sometimes imaging guide the next step.

Supporting the wrist

Rest from lifting and painful gripping, and keep the hand raised when swelling is prominent. A wrapped cold pack may provide comfort for short periods. A clinician may recommend a removable support or splinting while the ligament settles; it should fit without causing numbness, colour change or increasing pain. Move the fingers regularly and begin gentle wrist motion when advised. Later, physiotherapy can rebuild grip, coordination and load tolerance before return to work, sport or manual tasks.

When to get checked

Seek prompt assessment after a significant fall, marked swelling, deformity, severe tenderness over a bone, or inability to grip or move the wrist. Urgent care is needed if the hand becomes numb, blue, unusually cold or increasingly painful. If pain or reduced movement persists despite protection, arrange review because an occult fracture or more substantial ligament injury may need different management.

Questions for your doctor

Does the examination suggest a sprain or another injury? Do I need imaging? How long should I use support, and which movements can I start now? When is loading the wrist appropriate?

Questions people ask

Should I keep a sprained wrist still?

Short-term support may help, but prolonged complete immobilisation can make the wrist stiff; follow a staged movement plan.

When can I exercise again?

Resume gradually when daily movement and grip are comfortable, strength is returning and a clinician has cleared heavier loading if needed.
