Is there a cure for nickel allergy?

Nickel allergy is a delayed contact reaction. It may cause itching, redness, swelling, dry scaling or blisters where metal touches the skin, often around jewellery, watches, fasteners or device parts. The rash can spread beyond the contact area, and repeated exposure can make everyday items difficult to tolerate.

Stop contact with the suspected item and keep a record of products that trigger symptoms. Choose nickel-free or well-coated alternatives, and avoid wearing jewellery over broken skin. A dermatologist can confirm the trigger with patch testing and recommend a topical corticosteroid for an inflamed flare when suitable. Use a bland moisturiser after washing, and do not scratch or cover an active rash with an irritating adhesive.

Book an assessment when a rash keeps returning, affects several contact sites, or does not settle after removing the suspected item. Seek urgent care for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, widespread blistering, fever or signs of infection such as increasing warmth, pus or rapidly worsening pain.
