Is there a cure for morphea?

Morphea is a form of localised scleroderma that causes firm, discoloured or thickened patches of skin. Active inflammation may create new areas or enlarge existing ones. Once inflammation settles, the skin can remain lighter, darker, tight or indented, so improvement is often gradual rather than immediate.

A dermatologist chooses treatment according to the depth, location and activity of the disease. Creams may be used for limited superficial patches; topical calcineurin inhibitors can be an option when appropriate. More extensive or deeper disease may need light treatment such as narrowband UVB phototherapy or medicines that work throughout the body. Moisturising, gentle cleansing and avoiding friction can support the skin barrier. Take dated photographs so changes are easier to discuss at follow-up.

Arrange a dermatology assessment for a new firm patch, spreading border, pain, reduced movement near a joint, or involvement of the face, scalp or eyes. Seek prompt medical care if an area becomes suddenly painful, ulcerated, infected-looking or rapidly changes. Earlier assessment helps distinguish active inflammation from an old, stable mark and guides treatment intensity.
