What should you know about cupping and cellulite?

Cellulite forms when fat compartments push against connective bands beneath the skin. Suction lifts the skin and may increase local circulation or move tissue fluid, so the area can look smoother for a short period or feel less tight. The dimpling can return because the bands and fat pattern remain. Cupping can also leave circular marks, redness, tenderness, or bruising, especially when strong suction is used or the skin bruises easily.

Have a trained practitioner review your skin and medical history before treatment. Do not use cups over broken skin, active rash, infection, unexplained swelling, or areas with reduced sensation. Mention blood-thinning medicines, bleeding conditions, pregnancy, and a history of prominent scars. Ask what suction will be used, how hygiene is maintained, how many visits may be suggested, and what result is realistic. If dimpling remains bothersome, a dermatologist can compare options such as radiofrequency skin tightening, RF microneedling, carboxytherapy, or subcision.

Stop treatment and seek medical advice if pain is severe, bruising continues to expand, the skin becomes blistered or numb, or redness spreads with warmth or discharge. Sudden one-sided leg swelling, chest pain, or breathlessness needs urgent care rather than cosmetic treatment. Ordinary cup marks should gradually fade; persistent or worsening changes deserve an examination.
