CTC liquid biopsy: what the blood test can show

Depending on the cancer and purpose, the laboratory may count, capture, or analyse these rare cells. The result must be interpreted within a defined clinical setting and does not independently settle every diagnostic or treatment question.

CTC testing looks for intact tumour cells. Circulating tumour DNA testing instead analyses fragments of genetic material released into blood, although both may be described as liquid biopsy.

A tissue biopsy preserves the arrangement of cells and surrounding tissue, which can be essential for identifying cancer type and performing specific laboratory tests. A blood-based result may complement tissue information rather than replace it.

Ask what exact assay is being ordered and whether it measures cells, DNA, or both. Confirm the decision the result could change and what the plan will be if no tumour cells are detected.

The blood draw itself usually needs little preparation, but follow the laboratory's instructions. Tell the person drawing blood if you bruise easily, take medicines affecting clotting, or have had difficulty with blood collection.

Apply firm pressure as instructed if the puncture site oozes. Seek prompt help for bleeding that does not stop, rapidly expanding swelling, severe arm pain, or fingers that become numb, pale, or cold.

Contact a clinician if redness, warmth, swelling, or discharge around the site worsens after collection, particularly if accompanied by fever. These concerns relate to the blood draw, not to whether circulating tumour cells were found.

Ask whether the assay is validated for your cancer type and current stage of care, whether a tissue sample is still needed, and how an unclear or negative result will be handled. Also request the full test name so future clinicians know exactly what was measured.
