CT scan versus MRI: understanding the choice

CT uses X-rays and is often quick, whereas MRI uses a strong magnet and radio waves and may provide greater soft-tissue detail. One test is not universally more accurate than the other.

CT can survey the chest, abdomen, bones, and blood vessels efficiently. MRI can separate soft tissues in areas such as the brain, spine, liver, pelvis, muscles, and joints with different image sequences.

Either examination may use a contrast agent, but the agents are different. A request for both scans can reflect a need for complementary information, not a failure of the first examination.

Read the appointment instructions because eating, drinking, and medicine guidance varies by protocol. For MRI, report implanted devices, metal fragments, operations involving metal, and severe claustrophobia before arriving.

For either test, disclose pregnancy or possible pregnancy, kidney problems, and earlier contrast reactions. Bring implant information if available, and ask in advance whether support for anxiety or lying still is appropriate.

During the examination, use the call system if you feel unwell, cannot breathe comfortably, or develop pain at an injection site. Staff can stop the scan and assess you.

After contrast, breathing difficulty, throat tightness, facial swelling, fainting, or a rapidly spreading rash requires emergency help. Increasing injection-site swelling, blistering, numbness, or severe pain needs prompt assessment by the imaging service.

You can ask what decision the images will guide, why CT or MRI fits that question, whether contrast is planned, and whether previous imaging can prevent unnecessary repetition. Also confirm how and when results will be discussed.
