CT scan tracer: what patients should know

It may be injected into a vein, swallowed, or given another way depending on the body area being examined. The agent supports image interpretation; it does not itself diagnose cancer.

Contrast alters how selected structures appear on the scan. An injected agent can outline blood vessels and enhance organs or abnormal tissue, while an oral agent can separate the digestive tract from nearby structures.

During an injection, a brief warm feeling, metallic taste, or sensation of passing urine can occur and commonly settles quickly. These expected sensations differ from an allergic-like reaction.

Follow the imaging unit's instructions about food, drink, and medicines. Before the scan, tell staff about previous contrast reactions, asthma, kidney problems, pregnancy or possible pregnancy, and all medicines you take.

A blood test may be requested to check kidney function before injected contrast. Afterward, follow the team's drinking advice; people with fluid restrictions should not increase fluids unless their clinician approves it.

Tell staff immediately if you develop trouble breathing, throat tightness, facial swelling, faintness, or a rapidly spreading rash during or soon after contrast. If these occur after leaving, seek emergency care.

Contact the imaging service promptly for increasing pain, swelling, colour change, numbness, or blistering around the injection site. A mild limited rash that appears later also deserves clinical advice, especially if it is worsening.

Ask which type of contrast is planned, how it will improve this particular scan, whether kidney testing is needed, and what to do with your regular medicines. Mention the exact symptoms and treatment from any earlier reaction rather than describing it only as an allergy.
