CT scan for the ribs: what to expect

It may be requested to examine an injury, persistent focal pain, an abnormality seen on another image, or a known condition affecting the chest. The result must be interpreted alongside your symptoms, examination and previous imaging; a scan finding alone does not establish every diagnosis.

CT can show the shape and alignment of rib bone in fine detail. It also captures structures around the ribs, including muscles, the lining of the chest and portions of the lungs. This wider view can help the reporting radiologist distinguish a bone change from a nearby soft-tissue or lung finding.

Some examinations use an imaging contrast agent through a vein to make blood vessels or soft tissues easier to separate. Contrast is not needed for every rib question. The requested scan area and contrast plan depend on what your clinician needs to investigate.

Follow the imaging centre's instructions about eating, drinking and regular medicines, particularly if contrast is planned. Tell the team before the scan about pregnancy or possible pregnancy, previous reactions to imaging contrast, kidney problems, allergies, or difficulty lying flat.

Remove metal items from the chest area when asked. During the scan, lie still on the moving table and follow short breath-hold instructions so breathing motion does not blur the ribs. Share the location of pain or any recent injury because that context helps the team match the examination to the clinical question.

Seek urgent medical care for severe or worsening shortness of breath, blue or grey lips, coughing up blood, fainting, confusion, crushing chest pressure, or major chest trauma. These warning signs require assessment based on the symptoms and should not wait for a scheduled scan or report.

After contrast, alert staff immediately if you develop breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, widespread hives, or feel faint. For pain that persists, disrupts breathing, or worsens without those emergency features, contact the clinician who arranged the imaging for timely advice.

Ask which part of the chest will be included, whether contrast is expected, and what question the scan is intended to answer. You can also ask when the written report should be available, who will explain it, and whether previous chest images should be supplied for comparison.
