CT scans and glioblastoma: what the images can show

How the structures involved in Glioblastoma differ from normal

Short answer

CT can quickly detect a brain mass, swelling, bleeding or pressure effects, but glioblastoma diagnosis and treatment planning usually require further imaging and examination of tumour tissue.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

CT strength
Fast assessment of a mass, bleeding, swelling and pressure effects
Further imaging
MRI often gives more detailed information for planning
Diagnosis
Tumour tissue is generally needed to confirm the type and molecular features

The short answer

An urgent CT is particularly useful when a person has sudden neurological symptoms or cannot immediately undergo another scan. Its appearance can raise concern for a tumour, yet imaging alone does not establish the precise tumour type.

How CT fits into assessment

The radiologist assesses the location and size of an abnormal area, surrounding swelling, displacement of brain structures, fluid blockage and any bleeding. Contrast may be used to make certain patterns clearer, although kidney function, allergies and the clinical situation influence whether it is appropriate.

MRI generally provides more detailed brain-tumour imaging and helps surgeons and oncologists plan care. A biopsy or tissue removed during surgery allows specialists to identify the tumour and its molecular features. The team combines pathology, imaging, neurological examination and overall health when recommending treatment.

What may happen after an abnormal scan

The immediate plan may include medicine to reduce brain swelling, seizure management when relevant, MRI, and referral to neurosurgery and neuro-oncology. Surgery may aim to obtain tissue and remove as much tumour as can be done while protecting important brain function.

After tissue confirmation, care often combines local treatment such as surgery and radiotherapy with chemotherapy. The exact sequence depends on tumour location, molecular findings, recovery, symptoms and personal priorities. Keep a medicines list, record new neurological changes, and bring a family member or trusted person to complex planning visits if that helps.

Neurological warning signs

Call emergency services for a first seizure, a seizure that does not stop as instructed in the care plan, loss of consciousness, sudden weakness on one side, new difficulty speaking, or severe rapidly worsening confusion. Prompt assessment is also needed for repeated vomiting, an escalating headache with drowsiness, new vision loss, marked loss of balance, or a significant change in behaviour.

Questions for the specialist team

Ask which CT findings require action now, whether MRI is needed, and how tissue diagnosis will be obtained. For a confirmed glioblastoma, discuss the goals and likely effects of surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy; how symptoms will be controlled; whether trial participation is relevant; and which changes should trigger an urgent call.

Questions people ask

Can CT confirm glioblastoma?

CT can reveal a suspicious brain mass and urgent complications, but the exact diagnosis usually depends on further imaging and pathological examination of tumour tissue.

Why might MRI follow the CT scan?

MRI shows brain anatomy and tumour characteristics in greater detail, which can help guide biopsy, surgery and other treatment planning.

What treatments may be discussed after diagnosis?

The specialist team may discuss brain tumour surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, along with medicines for symptoms and possible clinical trials. Recommendations are individualised.
