What should you know about CSU hives?

CSU means chronic spontaneous urticaria. The word chronic describes a condition that keeps returning over an extended period, while spontaneous means episodes may appear without a clear cause such as a particular food or medicine.

Hives are raised patches or welts that may be pale, pink or similar in colour to the surrounding skin. They can appear on different parts of the body, change shape and fade while new welts develop elsewhere. Itching is common and can disturb sleep or concentration.

Some people also develop deeper swelling around the lips, eyelids, hands or feet. This is called angioedema and can occur with or without surface hives. A clinician may diagnose CSU from the pattern, duration and examination, while checking whether medicines, infections, pressure, heat or other factors could be contributing.

Keep a simple record of when welts appear, how long they last, associated swelling, recent illnesses, new medicines and possible physical triggers. Loose clothing, gentle skin care and a cool compress may make itching easier to tolerate. Avoid scratching, since broken skin can become irritated or infected.

Treatment is chosen with a healthcare professional. An oral antihistamine is commonly considered to reduce itch and welts; the clinician may adjust the plan if symptoms remain active. Oral corticosteroids may be used for selected short-term situations, but they are not a routine long-term solution. Do not change prescribed treatment without advice.

Arrange a medical review if hives keep returning, interfere with sleep, or do not settle with the plan you were given. Seek urgent help for swelling of the tongue, mouth or throat; trouble breathing or swallowing; faintness; confusion; or rapidly worsening symptoms. These signs can indicate a serious allergic reaction and need immediate assessment.

A same-day assessment is also sensible when swelling is marked, hives are accompanied by feeling very unwell, or the rash looks bruised or painful rather than simply itchy. Bring your symptom record and a list of medicines, supplements and recent exposures.
