What should you know about cryotherapy for xanthelasma?

Xanthelasma are yellowish cholesterol-containing plaques, usually on the eyelids or around the eyes. A clinician first checks that the mark is xanthelasma rather than another eyelid lesion. During cryotherapy, a focused cold application injures the treated tissue so it can shed during healing. The eye region needs precise technique because nearby skin is thin and the eyes themselves must be protected.

The treated area may become red, swollen, tender or blistered before a crust forms. Colour change can linger while the skin recovers, and a treated plaque may need reassessment or more than one approach. Cryotherapy does not remove the underlying tendency for xanthelasma to develop, so recurrence is possible.

Have the lesion examined before arranging treatment, especially if it is changing, bleeding or affecting vision. Tell the clinician about eye disease, medicines that affect bleeding, previous scar problems and any history of poor healing. Follow the practice instructions for protecting the area and keeping it clean.

Do not pick a blister or crust. Use only the recommended dressing or ointment, avoid rubbing the eyelid and protect healing skin from sunlight as directed. Contact the clinic if you are unsure whether a product is safe near the eye. Other options may include CO2 Laser Resurfacing or Surgical Excision, chosen according to lesion position, thickness, skin type and your priorities.

Seek prompt medical advice for worsening pain, spreading redness, pus, fever, marked swelling, or a wound that is not healing. Get urgent eye care for vision changes, severe eye pain, light sensitivity or difficulty opening the eye. A new or atypical eyelid lesion also needs assessment rather than repeated cosmetic treatment.
