What should you know about cryotherapy for frozen shoulder?

Short answer

Cryotherapy may temporarily ease frozen shoulder pain, but restoring movement usually requires a tailored rehabilitation plan.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Role of cold
Short-term pain relief for some people
Main treatment goal
Gradual restoration of comfortable shoulder movement

What cold can and cannot do

Frozen shoulder, also called adhesive capsulitis, causes pain and restriction as the capsule around the shoulder becomes tight. A cold pack can temporarily reduce pain signals after activity, which may help some people tolerate gentle exercises. It does not loosen the capsule or correct reduced range of motion on its own.

Shoulder pain and stiffness can also come from rotator cuff tendinitis or another condition. Correct identification matters because the safest exercise, injection, or rehabilitation plan depends on the cause and the stage of symptoms.

Making it part of care

Ask a physiotherapist how to position the shoulder and whether cold is better before or after your exercises. Use a cloth barrier, protect the skin, and stop for burning, unusual numbness, marked colour change, or worsening pain. Never force the arm through a sharp or escalating pain.

Gentle range-of-motion work, posture advice, and gradual strengthening may be combined with symptom relief. If pain prevents progress, a clinician may discuss options such as a cortisone injection or hydrotherapy. Do not begin a demanding shoulder programme without assessment.

When to seek care

Arrange a review for persistent or worsening shoulder pain, a steadily shrinking range of motion, or symptoms that are not following the expected pattern. Seek urgent help after an injury causing deformity, sudden major weakness, loss of feeling, a cold or blue hand, chest pain, or breathlessness.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your symptoms fit frozen shoulder, how much movement is safe, whether cold should follow exercise, and when another treatment should be considered if pain continues to block rehabilitation.

Questions people ask

Can ice cure frozen shoulder?

No. Cold may ease pain temporarily, but it does not release the tight shoulder capsule.

Should I use cold before stretching?

Ask your physiotherapist; timing should support gentle movement without masking warning pain.
