What should you know about cryotherapy for eczema?

Eczema, also called atopic dermatitis, involves an irritated and weakened skin barrier. Cryotherapy deliberately damages a small area to remove a selected lesion, so it is generally used for specific growths rather than widespread itchy, dry or cracked skin. Applying extreme cold to an active flare can increase irritation, blistering or delayed healing.

A bump, crust or colour change in eczema-prone skin may have another cause. A clinician should examine an uncertain area before any procedure, particularly when it is new, one-sided, bleeding or not responding to usual eczema care. Use the treatment plan provided for your eczema, such as regular fragrance-free moisturising and prescribed anti-inflammatory medicine. Keep showers comfortably warm rather than hot, use a gentle cleanser, and avoid scratching or rubbing the affected skin. A clinician can adjust treatment when itching, dryness or cracking is disrupting sleep or daily activities.

Do not freeze an eczema patch at home or use a wart-freezing product on it. If a clinician has suggested cryotherapy for a separate lesion, ask whether the surrounding eczema should settle first and how the area will be protected.

Arrange medical advice when eczema becomes rapidly more painful, warm, swollen or crusted, or when fluid-filled blisters appear. Fever, feeling unwell, or redness spreading beyond the usual rash needs prompt assessment because infection can complicate broken skin.

Seek review for a spot that bleeds, forms a persistent sore, changes quickly or looks unlike your usual eczema. An examination can separate a flare from another skin condition and guide the right treatment.

Ask whether the area is eczema or a separate lesion, which moisturiser and prescribed treatment to use, how to manage night-time itching, and what signs would mean the plan needs changing. If a procedure is proposed, ask why freezing is suitable and what alternatives exist.
