What should you know about cryo liquid nitrogen?

Short answer

Cryo liquid nitrogen freezes selected skin tissue so a clinician can treat a lesion, with healing usually occurring as the treated area sheds and repairs.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What liquid nitrogen does

Liquid nitrogen is a cryogen: a substance cold enough to damage cells on contact. During a dermatology procedure, a trained clinician applies it to a defined spot, often with a spray or a small applicator. The cold creates a controlled area of injury, and the targeted tissue may become red, swollen, blistered, crusted, or darker before it settles. The response varies with the lesion, its depth, and the body site.

Freezing is used for selected lesions such as some warts, skin tags, and other superficial growths. A clinician should assess an uncertain, changing, bleeding, or pigmented lesion before freezing because tissue may need a different evaluation.

How to prepare and care for the area

Tell the clinician about poor wound healing, reduced sensation, circulation problems, immune conditions, prior abnormal scars, and medicines that affect bleeding. After treatment, keep the site clean and follow the dressing instructions. Do not deliberately peel a blister or crust. Protect healing skin from friction and strong sun, and use only products recommended for that location. Several treated spots or repeat sessions may be needed depending on the lesion.

When to seek care

Contact the treating clinic if pain is worsening rather than easing, redness is spreading, swelling becomes pronounced, drainage develops, or you feel unwell. Seek prompt assessment for heavy bleeding, a rapidly changing lesion, or a wound that is not healing as expected. Urgent care is appropriate for severe symptoms or a reaction affecting breathing or the face.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what the lesion is thought to be, why freezing is suitable, how many applications may be needed, what the normal healing changes look like, and which warning signs should trigger a review.

Questions people ask

Does liquid nitrogen remove every skin lesion?

What happens after freezing?

The area can change color, swell, blister, or crust as the treated tissue heals.
